At Upton Heath, Music is taught using the Charanga scheme, providing children with a structured and progressive curriculum that develops their skills in listening, singing, playing, composing and performing.
Where appropriate and meaningful, Music lessons are linked to our whole-school Quest topics, helping children to make rich connections between their musical learning and the wider curriculum. This approach allows children to explore music from a variety of styles, traditions and cultures, fostering an appreciation of the subject as both a creative discipline and a lifelong source of enjoyment.
In addition to their classroom Music lessons, children in Year 5 receive whole-class instrument tuition from a professional, specialist music teacher. This gives every child the opportunity to learn to play an instrument, building technical skill, confidence and a sense of achievement over the course of the year. The tuition culminates in a concert performed in front of parents, giving children a memorable opportunity to share their progress and celebrate their hard work with family and friends.
Through Charanga and our specialist instrumental tuition, children build their musical knowledge and skills progressively as they move through the school, gaining confidence in using their voices and a range of instruments, as well as developing their understanding of musical elements such as pulse, rhythm and pitch. Lessons encourage children to listen carefully, express themselves creatively and work collaboratively, in keeping with our Christian value of Together.
By the time they leave Upton Heath, children will have developed a genuine love of music, along with the skills and confidence to continue exploring it in their future learning. We believe that a broad and varied music curriculum, including the memorable experience of whole-class instrument tuition and a concert performance, enriches children's wider education and supports their creativity, wellbeing and sense of belonging within our school community.
