The Key Stage 1 Curriculum

At Upton Heath our Curriculum Quests allow us to plan deep learning experiences across all subjects with knowledge carefully sequenced. They provide our children with a connected learning experience that is both broad and balanced developing a love for learning and allow them to immerse themselves fully in their studies while making links across subjects and learning opportunities.

We have an exciting half term ahead and a full curriculum of activities planned. Our main ‘Quests’ this half term will be Geography, History, RE Science and The Arts. The children will be given many opportunities to further develop their knowledge and gain a better understanding of these areas of learning. Within the ‘Quests’ there may be workshops, key visitors to school and planned trips to places of interest.

Maths: Our focus will start with place value, moving onto addition and subtraction as we move through the half term.

We have daily phonics lessons using Anima Phonics, a multi- sensory method, teaching children actions for each of the 44 letter sounds. You can also access Anima Phonics from home https://www.animaphonics.com.

  • Top tips for KS1

PE days for Pinecones class will be Monday and Tuesday, for Holly class Wednesday and Thursday and for Beech class it will be Wednesday and Friday.

Children are asked to come to school in their PE kit on their PE day. This is to reduce the need for additional items in school and also enables the children to do more PE (no time lost getting changed). A full PE kit consists of: a plain white t-shirt, trainers, dark coloured jogging bottoms or shorts and a dark coloured jumper / hooded top.

Forest learning (outdoor learning): Every Thursday, the children in Holly and Beech class go up to the school mini woods to enjoy some outdoor learning and Forest School activities. Children in Pinecones class visit to school mini woods on a Friday. This is the highlight of the week for many of the children and gives them the opportunity to develop and grow in a different environment. Children will need to come to school dressed appropriately in non-uniform with suitable outerwear. They will also need to bring in a pair of wellies or sturdy boots, which are kept in school for the half term.

Reading: Please listen to your child read regularly as this will support their confidence, fluency and has a huge impact upon their language and writing skills. Sharing and enjoying books together and reading to your child are equally important. Please ensure you have signed your child’s reading record so their book can be changed twice a week.

Reading books are collected in and checked on a Monday and Thursday, with new books being sent home. Please can you ensure that your child has their reading book and diary in their school bag throughout the week  as this allows us to read with the children in school too.

Thank you for all you do to support your child’s education and development at home. Together everyone achieves more.
