At Upton Heath, Design Technology gives children the opportunity to think creatively and solve real-world problems, combining practical skills with imagination and critical thinking. Through our exciting and innovative curriculum, pupils learn to design, make and evaluate products for a range of purposes, drawing on knowledge from mathematics, science, computing and art.

Making full use of our dedicated STEM room and creative spaces, children explore everything from structures and mechanisms to textiles, food and 3D printing, developing confidence with tools and materials as they progress through the school.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced so that each project builds on skills learned previously, helping children to become increasingly independent designers and makers. Pupils are encouraged to ask questions, plan thoughtfully, and reflect on their work, developing resilience as they refine their ideas in response to challenges. Design Technology at Upton Heath also nurtures our Christian values of Compassion, Courage and Responsibility, as children consider the needs of others when designing products and learn to persevere when a first attempt does not go to plan.

By the time they leave Upton Heath, children will have experienced a broad and varied range of design and technology projects that inspire curiosity and a lifelong enthusiasm for creating and problem-solving. We believe that these practical, hands-on experiences not only prepare pupils for future learning but also help them make meaningful connections between subjects, equipping them with skills that will serve them well in a rapidly changing world.
