Text
Welcome to Year 3! We have one Year 3 class: Juniper. Juniper is taught by Miss Hodge. Meet the class teacher on the right. We always have lots of exciting new learning to share so head to our school Facebook page to see what we have been up to!
Spring Term 2026
Subject Quests:
We link our Reading and Writing lessons to our subject quests, to fully immerse the children in their learning During the Autumn term, Year 3 completed four quests: Welcome to Europe (Geography); Ancient Egypt (History); Worship and Festivals (RE: Hinduism and Christianity) and Magnetic Moves (Science). Our first quest this term is our second history quest of the year: ‘Step Into the Stone Age.’ We are reading ‘Stone Age Boy’ by Satoshi Kitamura and this is our inspiration for writing tasks this term. During this quest, the children will learn about prehistory and archaeology. They will learn about the key changes from the Stone Age to the Iron Age in Britain and will explore the evidence from important discoveries and sites. Our second quest for Spring 1 will be our second RE quest of the year, during which we will learn about Islamic prophets and worship.
Maths:
At the start of Spring 1, we will focus on times tables and informal methods of solving multiplication and division calculations, reasoning and problem solving. We will then progress to formal written methods for multiplication of two digit numbers and division with remainders. We will then move on to a Measures unit (length and perimeter) followed by Fractions. We take a mastery approach to teaching maths, using the Power Maths scheme to support teaching and learning, with concrete apparatus used to ensure a strong foundation. More information on the teaching and learning of Maths can be found under curriculum.
Individual Reading:
Reading books and reading records should be brought in every day. Children will read daily and any reading at home should be noted in their reading records. In Year 3, the children are encouraged to complete quizzes and change their own books independently. Changing reading books can be done first thing in the morning or after lunch during the daily ‘quiet reading’ session.
Guided Reading:
We share exciting texts through whole class guided reading sessions when we explore different genres and discuss the stories, characters or information, encouraging the children to make predictions and express their opinions. We also teach reading skills through small group sessions. Our guided reading texts are chosen to complement and enhance our subject quests.
PE
During Spring 1, PE lessons will be on Fridays and the children should come to school dressed in PE kits. We will teach one hour of gymnastics and one hour of netball skills every Friday morning.
Home Learning:
We would like the children to read regularly (preferably each day) and to practice their maths skills using Numbots and Times Table Rockstars. The children will also be expected to learn weekly spellings from their spelling lists which are given out at the start of each half term. The children will work on their spellings all week at school, then bring home a spelling task sheet to complete every weekend. Following this, they will be tested on the words on a Monday morning.
